You need to make sure to change the water in your pet rats’ water bottles every day with fresh clean drinking water (super important).

You also want to get more than one water bottle if you have several rats. Two water bottles in a cage of four pet rats, for example, is very helpful in keeping your rats happy because they’ll be less territorial and all can get water even if they’re thirsty at the same time. It’s also good to have more than one water bottle just in case one of them stops working.

You also need a water bottle and never a bowl of water because a bowl will get dirty very quickly, whereas the water in the water bottle will stay clean.

Some water bottles we ended up throwing away pretty much immediately (not recommended here), whilst other water bottles were like the Cadillacs of the pet rat water bottle world (weird analogy, I know). We’re only going to recommend you the best of the best so you can keep your lovely little ratties healthy and happy.

Keep in mind that even though these pet rat water bottles are the best you can buy, each brand still has its share of reviews from customers saying the bottle leaked.

We’ve found that this is easily remedied and avoided if you do two things.

1. Read the instructions that come with the bottle.
2. Create a vacuum in the water bottle. We’ll tell you how to do that at the end of this article.

Choco Nose H125 Patented No Drip Pet Rat Water Bottle

This water bottle is the most reliable non-drip water bottle. It clips super easily onto the cage and doesn’t slip or move around. The nozzle is perfect for rats (and other rodents) to access and drink from. It’s also super easy to clean and refill.

We know you can get water bottles cheaper than this. But seriously this is well worth the price. It will pay for itself by being reliable, not leaking, and not breaking.

If you go for something cheaper, all bets are off and you’ll end up spending money in the long run by replacing the bottles. You’re best off just picking up a couple of these awesome Choco Nose water bottles. 

In addition to being sturdy, easy to clip onto any cage, easy to refill and clean, and never leaking, we also love how quiet this water bottle is. You know how noisy pet rats can be when sucking away at their water bottle and moving that little ball bearing. But this is easily the quietest water bottle we’ve ever owned.

Oasis Pet Rat Water Bottle

Firstly, aesthetically it’s gorgeous. But it’s also super functional.

It’s easy to mount onto the cage, your rats will have no problem getting to the water, and it’s super easy to refill and clean.

The Oasis is very trustworthy when it comes to being leak-proof and we’re not the only pet rat owners who think this water bottle is fabulous. We’ve spoken to many pet rat owners who only trust the Oasis brand.

Sure, we’ve seen some people complaining that it does in fact leak but we think that might be more to do with having a cramped cage because most bottles will leak if something (like bedding or a toy) is pressing against it.

Make sure nothing’s pressed against it and you’re good to go!

Delight eShop Pet Rat Water Drinking Bottle 

This is another very reliable pet rat water bottle.

It’s about half the price of our first choice and almost as good.

This one doesn’t get our top place because we don’t like the spring rope that it comes with to fix it into place. It’s a bit fiddly but you can get used to it.

Also, this water bottle isn’t as quiet as our top choice.

But enough with the comparisons!

This is still a great water bottle for pet rats. It’s sturdy, it doesn’t leak, and it fits easily onto the side of your cage. 

Lixit Water Bottle 

For a mid-range price, they’re well worth the money.

Most of them are made of plastic, though you can pick up glass varieties too if you prefer plastic over a glass (some people think the glass is easier to clean).

They’re very easy to clip onto your rats’ cage, easy to clean, and refill, and don’t leak.

The Lixit water bottles can be a bit noisy but if you think the sound of your little ratties drinking water is cute, it’s not a problem!

Once you’ve chosen what water bottle to get your pet rats, here are a few more things you should know:

• A rat will drink 1.4 ounces / 44ml of water every day. Make sure your water bottle is large enough to hold more than enough water for all of your rats (tip: get two water bottles). But you also don’t want to get a water bottle that’s way too big because that will lead to wasted water. 
• You can stop a leaking water bottle by creating a vacuum when filling up the water bottle. First, make sure you fill the bottle with room-temperature water. If you use cold water, the change in temperature could alter the pressure in the water bottle and lead to leaks.
  Also, once you’ve filled the water bottle and screwed the cap on, squeeze some water out of the bottle, making bubbles appear to rise to the top. You’ve now created a vacuum that will stop the bottle from leaking.
• Give your rats fresh clean water every day. Yes, we’ve already said this. But it’s worth repeating! We love our rats, we love your rats, we love ALL rats and we want them to be happy and healthy.
