Quick answer: Litter deodorizers, like Arm & Hammer’s baking soda-based Double Duty, are sprinkled on litter to reduce odor. Many cats accept them, but some cats dislike added scents and may avoid the box. The most effective odor control is frequent scooping and regular full litter changes. A sudden stronger smell, or changes in urine amount or clumps, can signal a health problem.

- Much larger or more frequent urine clumps (possible kidney disease or diabetes)
- Strong, unusual odors or blood
- Straining or frequent small trips (a male cat straining with little urine is an emergency)
Litter box avoidance
If your cat starts going outside the box after you add a scent, remove it. Litter box avoidance can also be a sign of medical problems, so see your vet if it continues.
