Quick answer: Orijen Original is a high-protein, grain-free dry dog food. It’s complete and balanced for dogs, but it’s also calorie-dense, so portions need care. Orijen was among the brands named in reports to the FDA during its investigation of a possible link between certain diets (many grain-free and high in legumes) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. A cause hasn’t been established, but it’s worth discussing with your vet, especially for breeds at risk of heart disease.
Things to consider
- Calories: high-protein, high-fat foods make overfeeding easy. Measure portions
- Grain-free: most dogs don’t need grain-free diets. Grain allergies are uncommon
- DCM question: discuss with your vet, and watch for signs like tiring easily, cough, or fainting
- Manufacturer: ask about nutritionists on staff, research, and quality control (WSAVA guidance)
How to compare alternatives
- Grain-inclusive diets from manufacturers meeting WSAVA guidance
- Foods matched to your dog’s life stage, size, and activity
- Prescription diets for dogs with medical needs
Is it working?
- Healthy weight and muscle
- Firm stools
- Good energy and coat
